Dr. Kate FitzGerald is a general surgeon who also brings her 10 years of consultant experience in breast oncoplastic surgery to the Riverina. Having qualified in Ireland in 2000, Dr. FitzGerald completed her general surgical training and gained Fellowship in General Surgery in Scotland. She went on to specialize in breast oncoplastic surgery at the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, Glasgow, and subsequently worked as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in NHS Scotland for five years prior to relocating to Australia in 2018.
Initially working in Griffith, Dr. FitzGerald gained Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2019 and worked in the role of Director of Surgery at Griffith Base Hospital until her move to Wagga Wagga in 2022. She continues to visit Griffith once a month, providing local general surgery consulting and operations.
Dr. FitzGerald’s special interest is in breast surgery. She performs wide local excisions, therapeutic mammoplasty, mastectomies, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and axillary clearances. Kate also performs breast reductions and breast reconstruction following mastectomy. She has a close affiliation with colleagues at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, aiding in the management of more complex patients.
Kate was the first surgeon to introduce Magseed Localisation of impalpable breast lesions into the public sector in NSW as a means of replacing traditional hook wires, and she continues to explore ways to improve surgical services in the Riverina.
Kate specializes in many areas of general surgery, including open/laparoscopic hernia repairs, gall bladder surgery, skin cancer surgery (including local flap and graft reconstruction), endoscopy (GESA accredited), thyroid and parathyroid surgery, and laparoscopic/open bowel surgery in addition to common general surgical procedures.
Kate is a Senior Lecturer with the UNSW Medical School and is passionate about the education of our next generation of doctors, particularly surgeons with an emphasis on regional surgical needs.

Andrew Thompson is a General Surgeon based in Wagga Wagga who manages a broad range of general surgical issues and has a special interest in breast and endocrine surgery.
Andrew consults from his Wagga rooms and operates in several public and private health facilities in Wagga.
In a regional centre a good general surgeon needs a broad skill set and a focused area of expertise that complements the remainder of the surgical workforce. Andrew has for many years tailored his training with this in mind. He manages a full range of elective and emergency general surgical problems, performing laparoscopic procedures, endoscopy and colonoscopy as well as surgery for melanoma, skin cancers and hernia.
Andrew’s particular surgical interests are in the management of breast and endocrine conditions and his training reflects this. Andrew completed the Mary-Jo Reeve Fellowship with the internationally recognised Endocrine Surgical Unit at Royal North Shore hospital. He also spent two years in post-fellowship breast and endocrine surgical training. In 2016 he worked at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, running one of Australia’s busiest breast cancer referral centres and performing a range of oncoplastic and breast reconstructive procedures. The opportunity also allowed further training in general and emergency surgery in Queensland’s largest tertiary referral centre.
Andrew is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the UNSW Medical School and Director of Surgical Training at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. He holds full memberships with Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand, Australian and New Zealand Endocrine Surgeons.
Andrew is accredited as a VMO at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, Calvary Riverina Hospital and Riverina Day Surgery.
